Paul and Barnabas met ELYMAS the sorcerer in Paphos while preaching to Sergius Paulus, the Roman deputy governor during their first missionary journey. ELYMAS opposed them and tried to stop the governor from receiving and believing the gospel. Then Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, rebuked ELYMAS and declared that he would be blind for a time - and immediately a mist and darkness fell upon him. This encounter shows that God's power is greater than every form of opposition to the gospel. It also teaches that those who resist the truth will be silenced, but the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ will continue to advance and increase, reaching every nation, tribe, and tongue, until it culminates in the great harvest of souls into the Kingdom of God.
